The Anterion combines biometry, corneal topography and anterior segment OCT imaging in a single measurement session — all the data needed before cataract surgery or to screen for keratoconus.
The Anterion is an imaging platform for the anterior segment — the front part of the eye: cornea, anterior chamber, lens. In a single set-up, the device does what used to require several machines: biometry (measuring the length of the eye to calculate the cataract implant), corneal topography and tomography (maps of the curvature and thickness of the cornea), pachymetry and analysis of the anterior chamber.
In practical terms, for you: a single pass, with your chin on a chin rest, a few seconds of fixation per eye — and all the measurements the surgeon needs are acquired, with no contact with the eye at all.
The Anterion is based on swept-source OCT: a long-wavelength swept laser light (1300 nm) that passes better through the ocular media and images the front of the eye in high resolution, from the surface of the cornea to the lens. All the measurements — curvature, thickness, depth, axial length — come from the same images, so they remain perfectly consistent with one another.
This consistency makes the difference in demanding situations: implant calculation after refractive surgery, strong astigmatism requiring a toric implant, sizing of a phakic ICL implant, or screening for early keratoconus on the posterior surface of the cornea — invisible on a conventional topography.
Answers from Dr Yaïr Chetrit and Dr Mayer Srour, ophthalmologists in Noisy-le-Grand.
No — the device works with no contact at all: you look at a light target for a few seconds per eye, with no drops or anaesthetic.
It covers the main part of the anterior segment assessment (biometry, topography, pachymetry). The fundus examination and the OCT of the retina are still carried out separately to check the macula before the operation.
Yes: contact lenses temporarily distort the cornea and would skew the topography and keratometry. Remove them several days beforehand, according to the practice's instructions.
The Anterion is installed at the Noisy-le-Grand practice: all measurements are carried out on site, on the day of your assessment.
