Appointments and emergencies

How do I book an appointment with an ophthalmologist in Noisy-le-Grand?

Online on Doctolib or by telephone on 01 85 10 57 00. The Grand Paris Ophtalmologie practice is open Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 1 pm and from 2 pm to 7 pm, at 67 rue de Malnoue, 93160 Noisy-le-Grand.

Do you see eye emergencies without an appointment?

Yes. Emergencies are seen the same day, without an appointment, Monday to Friday from 8:30 am to 7 pm. Emergencies are also seen between 1 pm and 2 pm, with no break. The emergency is slotted into the day and generally seen in under 2 hours. All reasons for attending are dealt with, with referral to hospital if necessary. Details on the eye emergencies page.

Which symptoms justify an emergency consultation?

Red, painful eye, sudden drop in vision, injury or foreign body, sudden onset of floaters or flashes of light, double vision, swollen eyelid with fever. If in doubt, call the practice: better to be seen unnecessarily than too late.

What should I do in an eye emergency in the evening or at the weekend?

The practice is closed at weekends. Outside opening hours, call 15 (SAMU, the French emergency medical service) or go to the ophthalmology emergency department of the nearest hospital. From Monday at 8:30 am, you can come without an appointment.

Do I need a prescription from my GP to be seen?

No. Ophthalmology is a direct-access specialty: you are reimbursed as usual without going through your médecin traitant (GP), including for a child.

How long is the wait for an appointment?

Available slots are displayed in real time on Doctolib. Emergencies are seen the same day without an appointment; for a scheduled check-up, book online or call 01 85 10 57 00.

Where is the practice and how do I get there?

67 rue de Malnoue, 93160 Noisy-le-Grand. By RER A: Noisy-Champs or Noisy–Mont d'Est stations, then a bus or an 11 to 13-minute walk. By car: free parking nearby and blue-zone spaces. See the access and map page.

Do you see patients from neighbouring towns (77, 94)?

Yes. The practice is on the border of Bry-sur-Marne, Champigny-sur-Marne and Champs-sur-Marne, and sees patients from Chelles, Torcy, Villiers-sur-Marne, Gagny, Créteil and the whole of eastern Paris. Dedicated pages give the route from each town, for example from Chelles.

Your consultation

How does a first consultation go?

You are first seen by the orthoptist for preliminary measurements (refraction, eye pressure, visual acuity), then, depending on the reason for your visit, additional examinations are carried out on site (OCT, retinal photographs, visual field, topography). The ophthalmologist then interprets everything and answers your questions. See your first consultation.

How long does the consultation last?

Allow about 1 hour to 1h30: preliminary measurements, any additional examinations, dilation if necessary, then the consultation with the doctor. All examinations are carried out at the practice, in a single visit.

Which documents should I bring?

Your carte Vitale (French health insurance card) and your mutuelle (supplementary health insurance) card, your current glasses, your prescriptions and the list of your treatments, and your previous eye examinations (OCT, visual field) if you have any. Contact lens wearers: the reference of your lenses.

Are the pupils dilated at every visit?

No, dilation is not systematic: it is carried out only if the fundus examination requires it. The drops take effect in 15 to 30 minutes and cause blurred near vision and glare for 2 to 4 hours. More details in our article do pupils need to be dilated?

Will I be able to drive after the consultation?

Not if your pupils have been dilated: vision remains blurred and dazzled for 2 to 4 hours. Come accompanied or by public transport, and bring sunglasses.

Who is the orthoptist who carries out the first examinations?

The orthoptist is a paramedical healthcare professional trained over 3 years at university, a specialist in the assessment of vision. At the practice, they work as a pair with the ophthalmologists: they carry out the measurements and technical examinations, which allows the doctor to devote all their time to diagnosis and your questions.

Can I come to renew my glasses or contact lenses?

Yes. The renewal includes a complete eye check and correction of myopia, hypermetropia, astigmatism and presbyopia. See glasses and contact lens renewal.

Do you see children?

Yes, from the age of 1 and without a prescription: screening for amblyopia, strabismus and myopia, eye check before starting school. See paediatric ophthalmology.

Fees and reimbursement

How much does an ophthalmology consultation cost?

€65 for a consultation, €100 with OCT imaging, €70 for a visual field. The exact amount depends on the examinations carried out and is always given to you beforehand. All fees are detailed on the fees and reimbursements page.

Are you conventionnés (contracted with the national health insurance)? Which sector?

Yes. The practice’s doctors are conventionnés sector 2 (contracted with the Assurance Maladie, French national health insurance, and entitled to charge fees above the standard tariff) and members of OPTAM (a scheme that limits fee supplements): fee supplements (dépassements d'honoraires) are moderate and capped, and the Assurance Maladie reimburses on the basis of the conventionnés tariffs (70% of the base within the care pathway).

Do you offer tiers payant (third-party payment)?

Yes, on the Sécurité sociale (French national health insurance) share: it is paid directly to the practice through electronic transmission of your carte Vitale. You pay only the balance, which is generally then reimbursed by your mutuelle (supplementary health insurance). ALD exonérante (long-term illness with full cover) or Complémentaire santé solidaire (means-tested supplementary cover): 100% of the base is covered.

Is cataract surgery reimbursed?

Yes, it is covered by the Assurance Maladie. Depending on the implant chosen and the surgical fees, a balance may remain payable by you: it appears on the written quote (devis) given before the procedure, to be sent to your mutuelle (out-of-pocket cost often zero or low).

Is laser refractive surgery reimbursed?

No, it is an elective procedure not reimbursed by the Sécurité sociale. Many mutuelles do, however, offer a dedicated allowance. A detailed quote (devis) is given to you after the pre-operative assessment.

How much does an intravitreal injection or a laser cost?

Intravitreal injection: €200 to €260 excluding the medicine (Sécurité sociale share of about €110). YAG laser: €160 (Sécurité sociale share €68.70). Retinal laser or SLT: about €210. The amount is specified before each procedure.

Surgery

Where do you perform cataract surgery and what is the pathway?

The pre-operative assessment (biometry, choice of implant) is carried out at the practice in Noisy-le-Grand. The procedure takes place as day surgery at Hôpital Privé Marne-la-Vallée (Bry-sur-Marne), then post-operative follow-up is again at the practice. See cataract surgery and how it works.

Is cataract surgery painful?

No. The procedure is short, performed under local anaesthesia, as day surgery: you go home the same day. It is one of the most commonly performed operations in the world.

Do you offer refractive surgery (LASIK, PRK, SMILE)?

Yes. The complete pre-operative assessment (corneal topography, measurement of corneal thickness) is carried out at the practice to check that you can be operated on and to choose the appropriate technique: PRK, LASIK or SMILE. See refractive surgery.

Do you perform intravitreal injections at the practice?

Yes, in a dedicated injection room at the practice. Anti-VEGF injections are the reference treatment for wet AMD, diabetic macular oedema and retinal vein occlusions. See intravitreal injections.

Which lasers are performed at the practice?

YAG (secondary cataract, iridotomy), SLT (glaucoma) and Argon (retinal tears, diabetic retinopathy) lasers are performed on site, without hospitalisation. See medical laser.

Examinations and conditions

Which examinations are carried out on site?

OCT of the macula and optic nerve, OCT angiography, retinal angiography, Humphrey visual field, ultra-widefield retinal photography, corneal topography, biometry, ocular ultrasound (B-scan and UBM). See the technical facilities.

What is an OCT for, and is it painful?

OCT is a « scan » of the retina and optic nerve, with no contact and no pain, that takes a few minutes. It is used for the diagnosis and follow-up of AMD, glaucoma, diabetes and many retinal diseases. See macular and optic nerve OCT.

From what age should glaucoma screening start?

From age 40, and earlier if there is a family history. Glaucoma progresses without pain or early signs: only screening (eye pressure, OCT, visual field) can detect it in time. See glaucoma.

From what age should AMD screening start?

From age 55, earlier if there is a family history or smoking. A central spot, distorted lines or difficulty reading should prompt a quick consultation. See AMD.

I have diabetes: how often should my eyes be checked?

A fundus examination every year. Diabetic retinopathy progresses without symptoms and remains the leading cause of blindness before age 65; the practice carries out ultra-widefield imaging, laser and injections on site. See diabetic retinopathy.

I see floaters or flashes: is it serious?

Most often it is a posterior vitreous detachment, which is benign. But the sudden onset of floaters or flashes may signal a retinal tear and requires an examination within 24 to 48 hours: come the same day, without an appointment. See floaters and flashes.

Do you offer contact lens fitting?

Yes, for soft and rigid lenses alike, including on an irregular cornea (keratoconus, post-transplant). A fitting assessment is carried out at the practice. We no longer offer orthokeratology (overnight lenses). See contact lenses.
